briefing

In 2009, Samsung started the development of new apps for its upcoming new platform for mid-end and high-end phones and tablets, Bada. Since it was a brand-new ecosystem, Samsung ordered partners to start developing several mobile applications to populate the Bada store and allow users to have a significant portfolio from launch.

Solution

Though some of the ideas for the applications came from Samsung, we had the green light to propose new thoughts and build the concepts into new apps. The most important aspect was to create a vast array of tools, games and utilities that could explore the platform's capabilities and offer a collection for the end user.

the

approach

Since applications would differ a lot from each other, a small team of designers was selected to start working on both UX and UI for a set of applications. During the whole project, we created dozens of applications ranging from simple utilities such as a pocket flashlight to small games that used sensors such camera and accelerometer for tracking user’s movements. The process of creating each app would comprise an initial benchmark for both physical and digital products similar to the designed. For more dense apps, we performed deeper research that include interviews and focus group techniques.

Some of the applications created, including a flashlight, Scuba diving assistant, Sound meter, Sushi guide and Tic-Tac-Toe

The

Outcome

Several mobile applications were created with a wide range of tools, utilities and games. Some of them were merely simple gimmicks like a fishing tracking app or a food and wine pairing app. Others involved complex operations such as a personal finance app and a scuba diving app to help users keep track of decompression times.

For those applications that required professional assistance, we consulted with lawyers, professional cooks and chefs, medical doctors and health professionals to ensure that the information was correct and to ensure liability protection for app misuse. All the information was disclosed and corroborated by the legal team.

More applications: Battleship, Easy formula, Translator, Scoreboard and Finance Advisor

Lessons Learned

Designing for Samsung’s new Bada platform required adaptability. With evolving guidelines and no existing standards, we had to stay flexible and iterative, often adjusting our process on the fly. Each app presented a unique challenge, so we tailored our design approach based on complexity—reserving deep research and testing for more demanding tools, while keeping things lean for simpler utilities.

Working with subject-matter experts proved essential for apps involving sensitive or specialized content. Their input helped ensure accuracy and reduce liability, reinforcing the role of responsible design when users rely on your product for guidance. Even quick, focused research added value—validating ideas early and improving usability without slowing down production.

Lastly, involving legal teams from the start was key. It ensured clarity, protected both users and the company, and highlighted that trust is as critical to user experience as functionality or visual design.
